And now for the good news

And

now for the good news

Progress is being made in the fight against AIDS in Africa, thanks in no small part to the president's aid program. But that's not what some people want to hear.

This is probably the best news I have heard on the fight against AIDS in Africa, we know that that disease is rampant on that continent and we know that billions are spent there each year. This news story is brought to us by John Donnelly at the Boston Globe I was surprised tof see such a story at the Globe to be honest. Here is what he had to say in this great news story.

FIVE YEARS AGO, in Jos, Nigeria, a city on the country's central plateau, Dr. John Idoko regularly made rounds in a hospital packed with people dying from AIDS because they couldn't pay for the antiretroviral drugs necessary to keep them alive. Three years ago, as the price of the drugs plummeted, the Nigerian doctor was able to deliver the life-extending medication to 700 patients-until his government's supply ran out for several months.

Today, the change for the better is astonishing: Idoko now treats nearly 6,000 HIV-positive patients. He has expanded his clinic three times in five years, and his waiting room once again is too crowded. ``Now, we are eyeing an abandoned building nearby," he said last week, chuckling.

The major reason for Idoko's success is the Bush administration's AIDS program, which in the last three years has sent billions of dollars to Africa and helped save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. When I moved to Africa three years ago, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, was just getting off the ground. As I return to Washington this month, the $15 billion program is just hitting its stride, and many Africans believe it has become the single most effective initiative in fighting the deadly scourge.

``The greatest impact in HIV prevention and treatment in Africa is PEPFAR-there's nothing that compares," Idoko said.

Now that is great news is it not? How can anyone say that this is bad news or that the US is not doing its part in the fight on AIDS? Well apparently the World Community can as they refuse to acknowledge that the US has done this much good in Africa. I know why this is the case, and Mr. Donnelly hits on it in his article. Here is what he had to say about the World community and the AIDS conference that took place in Toronto last week.

“That debate was on full view last week at the International AIDS Conference in Toronto, which ended Thursday. While the AIDS epidemic in Africa is as urgent a crisis as it ever was-an estimated 24 million are infected on the continent and as many as 2 million died last year from AIDS-related illnesses-there are now at least some hopeful signs, though few activists in Toronto wanted to give the United States any of the credit. Indeed, the politically polarized bickering, according to those in Washington AIDS policy circles, could have effects far beyond the Beltway, threatening to impede national and international funding for AIDS programs.
. . .
One telling moment in Toronto came last Sunday when Bill Gates, whose foundation has spent billions on global health in recent years, praised PEPFAR, prompting a chorus of boos from the audience. Earlier, Stephen Lewis, the passionate United Nations special envoy on AIDS in Africa, said that the Bush administration's push for abstinence programs as part of its ABC policy-which calls for abstinence until marriage, being faithful to one's partner, and failing that, using condoms-amounts to ``incipient neocolonialism."

For three years, a wide range of AIDS activists, including Lewis, have been hammering at what they perceive as faults of the US AIDS program, creating the perception that the program is riddled with trouble. They have criticized the administration for funneling its billions into PEPFAR rather than the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, another new initiative based in Geneva. They have claimed that the US-funded treatment programs were moving far too slowly. They have questioned the wisdom of the US preference for funding faith-based groups, and have complained that Congress's mandate to spend one-third of all money targeted for prevention on abstinence programs is excessive and counterproductive.

So as we can see here they are quite miffed at the fact the US is going this alone, they want that 15 billion dollars filtered through their organizations so they can enrich themselves. They disguise it as the fact that the US programs are moving to slowly, and that they have a preference to teach abstinence and if that doesn’t work then use condoms. I have one question as I wrap this up, who is really looking out for the African people and their fight against such a deadly disease, Europe, the UN and Canada? Or the US that has given a more money than all three combined? I am sure that Dr. John Idoko will tell you differently if you talked to him in person, and he has made it clear that the last 5 years he has seen a great improvement in the fight on AIDS in his neck of the woods. It seems that the US has the right attitude towards this and once again the World is pissed because they can not get their greedy hands on some of my tax dollars.

Do you really believe what you wrote ? America the saver of the world !Hee, hee, you are kidding really. Listen to the news out of America and you will change your mind. Anyway I just wanted to tell you that the last post is too black you shouldn't write in bold. It hurts the eyes on the white font. If you want the post coming out differently, put the text in italic. That's what i think about the presentation of your blog.

That is the problem you are listening to the Media coming out of America. The picture they paint is not the real picture. What is wrong with giving the US credit when credit is due? I read so many articles and they are general of the mind that when I read something pertaining to the UN or the World in general. "Well we should have that money" or "How dare the Americans go alone, the UN should do it" do you not see the hypocricay there? Also yes I do believe the the UN should not have one dime of my tax dollars, and that the money the US spends in the world should be spent how we like it not some corrupt insitution like the UN.

And thank you for the font, hmm didn't notice it was bolded have to pay attention when I am posting from my .txt files on html I have inserted making sure my tags are closed.

You wanted comments about your blog. Well I didn't like the adsense links at the top of your blog they are distracting and doesn't work too well with your template.

I had some probelms about your comments about the AIDS conference, and Americas part in it.

You know there are quite a few people, including scientist, doctors and laypeople that dont believe the HIV/AIDS Hypothesis. There's enough holes in HIV/AIDS theory to cause one to question it. Unfortunately and dissent on the HIV/AIDS hypothesis is quickly quashed in this country. I did an entry about this on my blog "To live another day" called "Oncogenes,Aneuploidy and AIDS..the scientific life and times of Peter duesberg."

" Oncogenes, Anueploidy and AIDS...", The author of this book, "Harvey Bialy" a molecular biologist and a dissenter about the HIV AIDS connection runs a website I think called "Virusmyth" (amoung others) you might want to check it out..its an old site.

Peter Duesberg is one of the leading dissenting scientist concerning HIV/AIDS a professor at U.C Berkeley in Molecular biology, yet you rarely hear anything about him in the media. Duesberg has his website about AIDS still up. you might want to check out these websites about AIDS.. Duesberg's book "Inveting the AIDS virus " is an interesting read..if you can find it.

Its dissconterting to me that Bill Clinton and Bill Gates want to throw alot of money at a syndrome who's etiology is questionable. It tell me that either they are correct , and have an informed opinion and that I am misinformed..or they are not informed.

Man with no name -

You are quite free to have your say, I however disagree, as I have had family that have died from the AIDS virus.

So if these millions of people that are dieing are not dieing from an immune system that is weakened by a virus that attacks the White blood cells, what are they dying from? What did my uncle have that attacked his white blood cells, and caused the liasons on his face and body? What caused him, an otherwise healthy man in his 30's, to get cancer, colds, flus, and pnemonia?

You are free to have your say, but till someone else comes up with something plausible for what is attacking these people's white blood cells and eventually causing their deaths I can not buy what you are saying. To put your head in the sand and say over and over this is not real is not going to solve the problem. I will not buy a book, as any crack pot with a computer can write a book and state any opinion they wish.

Thank you for your comments on the blog I will work with the adsense setup some in the days as I am trying out different styles and looks.

I'm not saying you have to buy a book, though I suggest reading "Inventing the AIDS Virus"
By Peter Duesberg who's a PHD, professor in Molecular Biology at U.C Berkeley. How do ya get to be a crackpot at U.C berkeley in molecular biology? Besides you asked for others to read your blog...?

I put a new link on my Blog to "Virusmyth" a site with dissenting information about HIV/AIDS...the url is www.virusmyth.net/aids/index.htm .
That information is easy to read.

I think too when it comes to HIV/AIDS its like what the lady says in the first article "Gattina" ..you should take what the papers say here with a grain of salt..can't believe everything in print or in the media, here anymore. Any real debate about HIV/AIDS in the media is quashed at its inception, possibly because there's too much money tied big pharmacuetical companies and advertising here in the U.S. media.

What might be killing these people dying of "A.I.D.S" in Africa and elsewhere? Thats a long answer , I guess its not a simple one..but the drugs used to treat HIV are toxic and can cause symtoms like the one your describing, AZT is one of. Alot people think that the reporting is inaccurate has to who has HIV, and whos dying of AIDS, and what is HIV in the first place.

I guess my bottom line is that If HIV is the killer cause of AIDS and AIDS is an infectious disease, than why aren't more people affected by it and dying of it here in the U.S? Do you remember the hysteria about it when news of it first broke out in America? We should all be dead or dying from it if it was the killer disease every thought was .

Bill Gates was indeed booed at the Toronto AIDS conference for mentioning fidelity and abstinence. No one makes a buck when Africans or others practice simnple monogamy---plus the very idea of a monogamous African conflicts with the Western Myth of the Hyper-Sexed African.

But Gates was on the right track. See my book
